College Preparedness

Being college-ready is very important. Below are some very useful websites.  The first was started by the College Board, the makers of the SAT, PSAT, and AP exams, and features a campaign called “You Can Go!”  The website is www.YCG.org  Some other sites are:

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step every student must take to apply for federal grants, work-study and student loans. Some scholarships and many state financial aid programs, such as the Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant Program (OTAG), require a completed FAFSA also. Find the FAFSA application and information at https://www.fafsa.gov.

“Oklahoma’s Promise” will help pay tuition at an Oklahoma public two-year college or four-year university or a portion of tuition at an accredited Oklahoma private college or university.  It can also cover a portion of tuition for courses at public technology centers that are approved for credit toward an Associate in Applied Science degree at a public college. Scholarship Opportunities

          Fastweb.com – For nearly 15 years, Fastweb has been the leading scholarship search provider for every student, whether you’re in high school or an adult wishing to attain a higher education. One-in-eight high school seniors use Fastweb, and the site is recommended by over 16,000 high schools and 3,600 colleges. Fastweb not only finds students scholarships, but also provides a plethora of information and guidance as students research universities and jobs. Fastweb provides current news on financial aid, scholarships, colleges, jobs and internships, and student life. Navy Scholarship Programs–  The NROTC offers a four-year scholarship worth up to $180,000. This covers full tuition, books, fees, uniforms and a monthly stipend of $250.  Upon graduation, students enter the Navy as commissioned officers in occupations such as Engineering Pilot, Naval Flight Officer, and Surface Warfare Officer. Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation– Seniors in high schools throughout the United States who meet eligibility requirements may apply each year for one of 250 four-year, achievement-based scholarships. For more information, visit https:/www.coca-colascholars.org

United Methodist Higher Education Foundation Scholarship Program– Information about this scholarship is available online at www.umhef.org.  You can also get information via mail at United Methodist Higher Education Foundation P.O. Michael Neil Minter Senior Scholarship– This is an endowed scholarship fund of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation that was established family and friends of Michael Neal Minter Sr. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from a public high school in Oklahoma County. Information about this scholarship is available at http://occf.org/minter/.

Charles C. and Mary Lou Miles Scholarship– This is an endowed scholarship fund of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation for graduating seniors from a high school that participates in the Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network. Friends of Kim Jones Shelton Scholarship– This scholarship is available to graduating seniors from a central Oklahoma high school with a GPA ≥ 3.5 who also have financial need relating to a disability or challenging circumstance of the applicant or the applicant’s parent. Preference is given to black female students. Dr. Ruth Mershon Scholarship– This scholarship is available to graduating seniors from a high school that participates in the Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network. Candidates must demonstrate high academic achievement as evidenced by a GPA ≥ 3.5. Applications must demonstrate exceptional academic performance and aptitude, and the ability and commitment to excel beyond the local high school environment. The value of the scholarship is based on unfunded need. The Dr. Ruth Mershon Scholarship award is up to $8,000 per academic year for a maximum of four years. The scholarship is a ‘last dollar’ award and may be applied to the cost of tuition, fees, required books and supplies, and on-campus room and board. Recipients must be enrolled full time in a course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree. Educational institutions must be academically accredited, nonprofit institutions. Distance and online programs will not be approved. Consideration for renewal requires a cumulative collegiate GPA of 3.0 or higher each semester, and no course grade less than a 2.0 on 4.0 scale. The Dr. Ruth Mershon Scholarship is a scholarship fund of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation that was established by the Ruth Mershon Trust to encourage students in their aspiration for academic success. Commander Family Scholarship– This is a scholarship fund of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. Applicants must be eligible to apply for Community Foundation Scholars. See https://occf.academicworks.com/opportunities/759 for more information. 

Mike Allen Memorial Education Scholarship – Eligibility: Graduating seniors of an Oklahoma City Public School District high school. Financial need is considered. Funds may be used for tuition, fees and book expenses. Payments are made directly to the school. The Mike Allen Memorial Education Scholarship was established in 1996 by the Oklahoma City Federation of Teachers in honor of the late Federation president.
