SNAP Benefit Disruption Could Affect Families

Find Resources if SNAP Benefits are Disrupted

More than 684,000 Oklahomans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) each month to help put food on the table. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) informed the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) that SNAP funding could pause beginning November 1 if the federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, continues.

Because of the government shutdown, families may not receive November SNAP benefits unless Congress passes a funding bill before the end of October. Officials advise families to spend their available EBT balances by October 31, when current funds expire.

Local food banks and community organizations are already preparing to help families likely to be impacted. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma has stocked additional supplies and is working with partner agencies to meet increased need if benefits are interrupted.

Families who use EBT cards are also encouraged to lock their cards when not in use to prevent fraud or theft, since lost or stolen funds cannot be replaced.

If your family depends on SNAP benefits, planning and staying informed is a good idea. A list of local food pantries and nonprofit resources is available through OKDHS and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
