Stay Informed and Prepared for Winter Weather
Posted on 01/22/2026

ASTEC encourages families to stay informed and prepared as winter approaches. Planning can make a meaningful difference in keeping our community safe and supported during severe weather conditions.

OG&E encourages families to prepare for colder temperatures by creating a safety plan, checking on loved ones, and identifying nearby warming locations. Taking these steps now can help keep everyone safe during severe winter weather.

Know Where to Find Warming Stations

For individuals and families who may need a safe, heated space during extreme cold, OG&E provides a list of warming stations each winter across its service area. Customers are encouraged to review this list in advance so they know where to go if needed.

Winter Safety Tips from OG&E

Stay weather aware
Monitor local news or weather apps, and check road conditions before traveling. Customers are encouraged to sign up for myOGEalerts to receive essential updates.

Make a plan for you and your loved ones.
Create a safety plan and build a support network for elderly or homebound family members and neighbors. If you or a loved one relies on electricity to power a medical device, know your options in advance. Be sure to include pets and their needs in your plan.

Stay home if possible.
If travel is necessary, prepare before leaving:

  • Stock emergency kits with prescription and over-the-counter medications, bottled water, canned goods, pet food, and a portable device charger
  • Keep one emergency kit at home and one in your vehicle
  • Charge all devices fully
  • Carry blankets or extra coats in your car
  • Dress for extreme cold
  • Wear layered clothing, waterproof insulated boots, gloves or mittens, and a hat. The body loses a significant amount of heat through the head. Avoid wearing wet clothing, which can cause rapid heat loss.

Weatherize Your Home
To help conserve heat and reduce strain on your heating system, consider:

  • Cleaning or replacing furnace filters
  • Clearing warm-air registers and baseboard heaters of furniture, carpeting, or drapes
  • Sealing expansion joints and minor wall cracks with caulk
  • Checking windows and doors for air leaks and applying weather stripping or putty as needed
  • Insulating water heaters located in unconditioned spaces

If You Lose Power During a Winter Storm
If an outage occurs, these steps can help conserve energy and keep your home safer:

  • Place heaters on a hard, non-combustible surface
  • Never use a gas range or charcoal grill for indoor heating
  • If indoor temperatures drop to 55°F, allow faucets to drip slightly to prevent frozen pipes
  • Open curtains and blinds during the day to allow sunlight to warm your home
  • Close curtains and blinds at night to reduce heat loss

Preparing ahead of winter weather—including knowing the warming station locations—can help keep families safe, warm, and informed during extreme cold.
