To ASTEC Scholars and Parents:
Today, state officials announced that Oklahoma students will not return to the classroom for the remainder of the current school year, as our state continues to fight the spread of the deadly COVID-19. Instead all Oklahoma students will be required to participate in distance learning from home. Schools are not allowed to have any activities, including prom or graduation.
We understand the disappointment this brings to our scholars, especially our seniors. We can't promise because finding a place for graduation could be difficult since most have to be booked 1-2 years in advance, but we will make every effort to have graduation rescheduled at a later date.
Beginning April 6th, your scholar is required to log into their Google Classroom account that they use at school and begin their classes online. This is not optional. Students who do not log in and do not complete and submit assignments will be considered truant and will be reported to the authorities as such.
We understand we have some scholars who may not have devices or Internet at home. We have a plan for those students.
A couple of weeks before spring break ASTEC started on a plan to deliver online, distant learning should it become necessary. We took a survey of our scholars to see who did not have devices at home and who did not have Internet at home. We have that list. We will check out Chromebooks to those students and give you the information to receive free wi-fi.
If your scholar is one of those, you should make an appointment to pick up and sign for the Chromebook at the high school office between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, Monday, March 30th-April 3rd. Only a parent or guardian may come into the office area and get the Chromebook. All Chrome books have been sanitized. our staff will have gloves and a mask.
If you have been exposed to the virus or have been out of state, you may not come into the school to pick up a Chrome book. Please call the high school office instead (405) 947-6274 for further instructions.
As we posted on our Facebook page, students 18 and under may receive free breakfasts and lunches at most local Oklahoma City Schools. We have posted a link to a list of 33 elementary school sites in Oklahoma City serving these meals. Any child 18 or younger may receive a meal at one of those sites.
We ask that you for now answer phone calls from unfamiliar numbers, as it may be from the school.

Distance Learning Information
Mandatory online classes begin Monday, April 6 at 8:30 a.m.
You must have WIFI. Free internet service information has been given to families.
Students must sign in and complete the daily assignments in each class before 11:59 PM in order to be counted present.
Parents of students who do not sign in will be contacted, If a scholar continues not to sign in or do adequate work, he or she will be counted truant and referred to authorities as required by law.
Students will receive assignments and instruction through Google Classroom.
If you have any issues logging into Google Classroom, email your first period teacher.
Teachers will be available for a virtual face-to-face meeting each day from 12:30-2:00.
You will receive instructions on the first day about how to access the live video meetings.
If you have a laptop, Chromebook, or tablet with a camera, you will be able to see your teacher, and your teacher will be able to see you.

Devices for Online Learning
ASTEC scholars must have a laptop, Chromebook or tablet and wi-fi in order to complete this school year online beginning April 6th. Cell phones are not an acceptable device for online learning.
ASTEC administered a student survey before Spring Break to see which students were in need of a device for online learning. ASTEC staff have been calling the families of these scholars and scheduling times for parents to come, one parent or guardian at-a-time, to check out Chromebooks.
If there are scholars who did not complete the survey accurately and do not have a device at home, parents need to call the school right away at (405) 947-6274 and make arrangements to pick up a Chromebook. Parents are responsible for the Chromebooks being returned in the same condition.
All Chromebooks are picked up at the high school office. Only one parent at a time may enter. If you have traveled out of state within the past 2-week, please call the high school and let the secretary know before you come.
Parents may have their temperatures taken before entering the school to pick up the Chromebook and sign the agreement. Chromebooks have been cleaned and sanitized. Staff wear personal protective equipment and are constantly wiping down surfaces to protect themselves and our visitors during this critical time.

While administrators and support staff are working onsite, the school doors are closed. Families must make appointments and will receive instructions on our “social distancing" expectations.
