2nd Grade Academics

Language Arts

Second-grade Language Arts advances reading fluency and comprehension as scholars explore increasingly complex texts. They decode words with common spelling patterns, read accurately at a conversational pace, and use context to determine word meaning. Scholars write complete paragraphs that include topic sentences and supporting details, and they use editing strategies to strengthen their work. Through reading, writing, and discussion, scholars develop independence and critical thinking.

Math

Second-grade Mathematics emphasizes number operations and problem solving. Scholars add and subtract within 1,000, explore basic multiplication and division through grouping, and use measurement tools to estimate and compare lengths. They read clocks to the nearest five minutes, count coins, and analyze data with bar graphs. Through reasoning and modeling, scholars apply math concepts to real-world situations.

Social Studies

Second-grade Social Studies deepens understanding of communities and their histories. Scholars describe the roles of citizens, explain how laws protect rights, and compare rural, urban, and suburban communities. They read maps and globes to identify continents and oceans and explore how traditions and cultures shape communities. By studying leaders and local heroes, scholars connect past and present civic life.

Science

Second-grade Science builds understanding of relationships among materials, plants, animals, and their environments. Scholars observe how matter can change through heating and cooling, investigate what plants need to grow, and examine how animals depend on their habitats. They describe patterns in Earth’s features such as landforms and bodies of water. Through inquiry and evidence-based explanations, scholars strengthen scientific reasoning.
